Facebook: A Single Point of Failure for the Web?
As was noted in The Nosey Faces Behind Facebook the leading social network has its roots in government, specifically DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). So it should come as no surprise now that Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg is promoting a new Open Graph API (application programming interface), designed to allow Facebook and participating sites to blend their respective user "social graphs" to customize their site experience for each individual visitor. Sounds great, no?
But there is a downside. "You could say that Facebook will tie all our information, and the whole web, together," says the Royal Pingdom blog. "When the web becomes 'interconnected' with Facebook," continues the article, "it also means that when Facebook breaks, the web breaks. In short, Facebook becomes a single point of failure for the web." Oops, not good. [entire article]
